"Do Not Buy! Defective Nvidia 8400 and 8600 chipset used = will die in 12-18month time and no support from HP!" 2010-03-27
By Yvonne Condon (Australia)
I was happy with this laptop until it died 14months after I purchased it, just two months out of warranty.

Defective Nvidia 8400 and 8600 chipset were used in the manufacture of these laptops, Nvidia have admitted there was an issue with these GPUs and it is only a matter of time before it fails and the laptop stops working, usually just when it is out of warranty.

The only repair option offered by HP is to have the entire motherboard replaced, approx $1000 AUD / $400 USD, at your expense.

For more information check out the HP support forum, there are thousands of posts from unhappy HP customers about these laptops: [...]

DO NOT BUY unless you have money to throw away!

"Do not buy this computer" 2010-01-14
By My honest opinion
This machine gets very warm - which eventually damages the hard drive and the soltering of the video card on the mother board. Video card cannot be replaced separately - it is integrated into the motherboard - so you have to replace the entire mother board for $398 + taxes. If you search for DV9500 NVidia, you will see MANY people on the blogs who have this same problem, and HP refuses to recall these machines, even though they have extended the warranty on other laptops with the same defective video card. HP was unable to solve a simple install issue for the replacement hard drive, so I returned it and bought one from another person on ebay who quickly identified the problem that was not in the HP install instructions. Then days later, my video card failed. My machine lasted only 2 years and 3 months, until both the hard drive and video card failed. I entered a complaint with HP, telling them that I expected this machine to last more than 2 years. They told me that the NVidia soltering on the motherboard fails. They said that NVidia changed to a "greener" method of soltering which does not last when laptops get warm. They are not willing to do anything to repair or replace this defective product unless I pay for it. So don't buy this machine unless you have the money to replace it after 2 years. I will not buy another HP!

"Nice when it was working" 2010-01-02

After approximately 2 years of use, you will have a very expensive door stop. I purchased this laptop at the same time I purchased a DELL Inspiron. The Inspiron is still as good as new while the HP died about 2 months back and Hp support is no help! Do youreself a favor and avoid spending any of your hard earned money on this soon to be paper weight.

 "A good machine!" 2009-11-28
By Papa Carlo (San Diego, CA)
I have had this laptop for 2 years and it has been an excellent performer at everyday use. I am reading the negative reviews and cannot help it not to notice that the biggest problem of the computer is sometimes is the owner who would not be happy with any brand.

This machine is very powerful for what I paid for it, and even after two years still remains very competitive on the market. I am somehow unhappy with Visa though but not to the extent that it would make me to go and buy Windows 7. Just a few annoyances that one can get used to.

What concerning the hardware I wish the battery ( I have an extended capasity battery )lasted a little longer.

But taking into account that this is a 17" laptop it is more customary to see in a static environment where the battery is not the most important component.

Otherwise I have zero complains and would buy it again.

"Nice laptop if you have the money to replace it in 2 years (or sooner).." 2009-11-24

I purchased a dv9500 laptop from HP approximately 2 years ago. At first I was nothing short of amazed with it. The picture it produced was beautiful and it was very light for a 17" laptop and it looked aesthetically very nice! A months had passed and I noticed it would get VERY hot while using it. I then purchased a laptop fan which worked great at keeping it cool. Little did I know that I was just prolonging a KNOWN problem with the graphics chipsets in these laptops. I should have just let it burn up while it was within warranty! To make a long story short, it finally gave me the HP 'black screen of death' approximately 2 weeks ago. HP refuses to fix the problem with these laptops and I was quoted $400 for a repair that won't fix the underlying problem! A far as I'm concerned HP can stick their laptops where the sun don't shine, because I will NEVER be purchasing another HP product again. I will also be informing my family, friends, co-workers, and anyone who listen to do the same. Consider yourself warned about purchasing an HP product.
