"If only a review could have no stars..." 2010-02-22
By Eric Owens (O FALLON, MISSOURI, US)
After returning the laptop on an extended warranty program for a known bios issue, the laptop was returned with the hard disk wiped and restored to factory image despite the fact the problem was not with the hard disk. The main board bios prevented the thing from booting so i had no way to backup the disk--they wiped out 7 years worth of photos, email evidence in a court case and weeks worth of recording my cd music. After the tedious effort of re-installing programs and getting restored what I could, i finally began to leave the machine on for extended periods of time to find out the battery wasn't being detected and would not charge. The machine was also shutting down as if it were a desktop being unplugged from the wall. When I called to have them fix the main board they broke with the original fix, they said that since it was past the extended warranty it would cost me to have them fix it--not to mention shipping. The *only* reason it went past the warranty to find the problem to begin with was because of the time it took to restore what they wiped out. Never in my life has a service department refused to fix something they either broke or did not fix properly from the start.

I will not ever purchase another HP product--printer, drive, computer or any other item. Absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced in 16 years as a professional in the IT field.

 "Runs hot" 2009-11-23
By Melanie Fraites (Caribbean)
I find it runs very hot and that makes me nervous about the future of the motherboard and components. heat affects my hands as well when using the key board or touchpad. the touch sensitive volume control at the dashboard and speakers needed replacement after just a few months. otherwise ok.

"Durable, but not sure about backup issues" 2009-10-15
By Christina Paul (Anamosa, IA USA)
I bought my HP DV9000 about two years ago at a Sam's Club. My reasons for buying it was because I feel far less cramped with the numeric keyboard on the side. The ease of learning my way around this machine were quite painless. I've owned Dell and IBM Thinkpads and this one by far met my needs far better than any other laptop I have owned. I don't think it is because I am particularly easy on my machines, but I do realise that not everyone is careful with how they handle their equipment. I do confess, this is not my main machine and use it mostly when I travel or when I am away from my desktop machine for whatever reason. I've taken this machine with me on various flights and on the road for various productions and on-site jobs and never had a bit of an issue with it. Still, I do use it almost daily and it's stood up to all that I have put it through.

The issues that I have had have revolved around the operating system of Windows Vista in conjunction with the HP system diagnosis interface. The drive is partitioned to where there is a small backup drive. I wanted to backup this drive to an external HD or a large capacity thumb drive, and the OS insisted that I use DVD's or CD ROM's which far less efficient. I did the DVD ROM backup and then it promptly told me that I had not done it at all. I am not sure if Windows or HP has a fix for this but it was very frustrating. Also, callibrating the battery is extremely difficult, even if you do follow the directions provided in the system itself. Also, the extra sleek black case is gorgeous, but it makes it particularly prone to attract fingerprints. You really do have to be dilligent about keeping the surface polished all the time otherwise it ends up looking extremely unkempt.

All in all, I would say that if you can just keep an eye on your HD backups and battery efficiencies yourself, without relying on the internal system to do it for you, it is a fairly good machine. I had not considered the HP brand before for a PC and was leaning toward Dell. However, the styling and the larger keyboard made me feel far less cramped when I worked so that is what sold me. The performance that I have recieved with this particular machine has made think I might give HP another look next time around, too.

 "Any brand but HP!!!" 2009-10-04
By John A. Klaesius
I've been through alot of computers. Compaq, Gateway, Acer, Dell, and now I'm stuck with this POS HP!!!! I bought it BRAND NEW from best buy. I've had the hard drive replaced 3 times so far, the wifi card has gone out, and the thing wouldn't turn on when I tried turning it on. So I had to have the motherboard replaced!!! I've had it less then 2 years, and it has needed all this done to it!And the internet card still acts funny on my own wireless network! I can't wait to get rid of this thing!!! I will never buy another HP computer! This is worse then my ACER! Stay away from HP altogther!
